Welcome To Scott Air Force Base, IL
Scott Air Force Base was one of thirty-two Air Service training camps established after the United States entered World War I in April 1917. The base commands and controls all logistics of United States military in air, over land and across the sea. It is located approximately 23 miles east of St. Louis and houses about about 3,000 residents. The base consists of 3,589 acres of land, 59 miles of roads, and 960 buildings. The communities around the base have experienced strong commercial and residential growth in recent years. There are numerous opportunities for shopping, dining and entertainment, while housing costs remain relatively low. The base remains in active use by the U.S. Air Force and is the home of Air Mobility Command's "Showcase Wing." The U.S. Army Surface Deployment and Distribution Command recently relocated to Scott Air Force Base, bringing many military transfers along with it. Scott Air Force Base is the fourth largest employer in the St. Louis area and largest employer in Illinois south of Springfield. The base also offers many civilian job opportunities. The attractive home prices, combined with the Welcome Home Heroes housing incentive by the Illinois Housing Development Authority, draw military families from around the country. Public transportation is accessible through the St. Louis MetroLink’s Red Line, and through the five MetroBus stations in the area.
